TE 401 Goals

I’m really looking forward to TE 401 because I am hoping it teaches me a lot of the aspects of teaching I do not believed were covered in our previous teaching courses. In previous TE classes we have learned a lot about the child psychology and cultural diversity, but have not really learned a lot about how to actually teach. I am hoping in this class to develop methods and strategies to teach students. I also am hoping to learn how to write lesson plans, since I still have not wrote one in my three years at Michigan State. I am excited about learning more about literacy. Out of all the TE classes, TE 348 was my favorites since it introduced me to a lot of the concepts of literacy. When I was filling out the literacy diagnostic I realized I did not remember many of these. I really want to learn many different ways of teaching children how to read. During my previous placements I had trouble helping students learn how to read and am eager to learn how I could help them improve. I am hoping during this semester I learn fun activities for my classroom that include these literacy concepts. When I was in elementary school, Language Arts was my least favorites subject. I am hoping to make sure no student in my class feels like this. I had trouble comprehending what I read until my parents hired a tutored to help me. This was because my teacher only taught one method to our class. I want to make sure I will be able to help all the students within my class. Another goal of mine for this semester is to see how children develop their writing and ways to teach this. I hope TE 401 will help me become more confident in teaching Literacy in the future.

Jessica,
As soon as I started to read your blog, I knew we had a lot in common. I feel that in our previous teaching classes, we have learned a lot about diversity, but not about how to actually teach. I hope that this class will explain to us how to teach using multiple strategies so we can reach out to all types of people. Also, I especially like your statement about lesson plans. I have not written one in my three years at MSU either! You would think that it would be a main priority to model how to construct a lesson plan to us, so I’m hoping in this class we will cover that. You mention that during your previous placements you had trouble helping students learn to read. What grade level were you in for your placement? I too had difficulty with my study child, and I feel like if I learn multiple strategies for teaching literacy, I could have helped her better.

Additionally, I agree with your point about Language Arts! All throughout school, even in college, Language Arts has always been my least favorite subject. So I don’t think your major is Language Arts, what is it? I think I dislike Language Arts so much because of the way the teachers presented the information to me. For example, I can remember going to the library one day and wanting to read a fantasy book, but my teacher would not let me. When I become a teacher, I want my students to have a choice and pick books that they are interested in reading. This might help them become more interested in literacy. What are some activities that you think you could use in your classroom to help students become interested in literacy? Also, I too had a tutor for language arts during middle school. I had a problem comprehending, and my teacher did not put out extra effort to teach comprehension more than one way. Therefore, I needed a tutor to explain the multiple strategies for comprehending. After she did so, I finally became confident with comprehension. I think with both of our previous experiences, it has definitely proved to us that using multiple strategies for teaching literacy is going to be very important in the classroom. This will able us to reach out to all levels of students. Let’s hope that this class will provide strategies that we can use to teach literacy which will make students like the subject.

Your past classes have been focused more on content -- this class is focused much more on the how of teaching, so you should learn more about that. Also, I realize you have never written a lesson plan, and we will talk about how to do that also. We don't focus a lot on writing, but that is covered more in 802.
I like how you have brought in past experiences, and I can infer what your goals are, but if you had to state each goal in one sentence, how do you think you could word them?

Jessica,
I really like that you are open to finding more than one method so that all students can learn. I know how you feel with only being taught one method in the classroom and struggling with it. This was my issue for the greater part of what would be my elementary school years. Although I would say language arts is not my least favorite subject, it would have been up to about the fourth grade. Although my school separated literature and English class for first through eighth grade and my least favorite subject was always English. I hve to disagree with you on the other TE courses though. I am sure it has to do with what TA's you had, but I learned a lot about teaching through those classes. I am also interested in how TE348 is your favorite TE class. Did you find it the most beneficial thus far in your academic year?
